Naming Our Boat
Human activity is the major cause of increased greenhouse gases (GHG) and other emissions
that contribute to climate change.
Greenhouse gases
are accumulating in our atmosphere
causing surface air temperatures and subsurface ocean temperatures to rise.
The most important greenhouse gases directly influenced by human activity are Carbon
Dioxide (CO2), methane(CH4), ozone, nitrous oxide and chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs). Like CO2,
methane is more abundant in Earth's atmosphere now than at any time during the 400,000
year long ice core record. About 2/3 of current methane emissions are released by human
activities such as rice growing,
factory farming
, landfills and natural gas handling. All gases
have increased significantly over the last 50 years.
