Clothing: Cotton versus Hemp

COTTON

1. On an annual basis, 1 acre of hemp produces as much fiber as

2-3 acres of cotton.

2. Hemp fiber is stronger and softer than cotton, and lasts twice

as long.

3. Cotton is the most used natural fiber in the textile industry. It

takes 140 days after planting for cotton to be ready to harvest.

4. It takes 20,000 liters of water to produce enough cotton to

make a pair of jeans.

5. Cotton grows only in moderate climates and requires more

water than hemp.

6.Cotton requires large amounts of pesticides and herbicides.

7. 50% of the world's pesticides and herbicides are used in the

production of cotton.

HEMP:

1. You can use fibers from industrial hemp in just 90 days.

2. Hemp is frost tolerant and requires only moderate amounts

of water and grows in all 50 states.

3. Hemp needs no pesticides and herbicides, and only moderate

amounts of fertilizer.

4. Hemp leaves a much smaller environmental footprint than

cotton. Integrating hemp into your clothing options could

benefit the environment.

HEMP PAPER AND BUILDING MATERIALS

Paper:

1. Annually one acre of hemp produces as much paper as 2-4 acres of trees.

2. All types of paper products can be produced from hemp and the quality of the

paper is superior to tree-based paper. Hemp paper will last longer and can be

recycled more times than tree-based paper.

3. Hemp fiberboard is stronger and lighter than wood. All of this reduces the

need to cut down trees.

Building Materials: Hempcrete

1. Concrete is the most used material.  Every ton of concrete produces

approximately one ton of CO2. This is a result

of energy required to reach extreme temperatures and breakdown of

chemicals to create concrete.

2.
Hempcrete is a composite made by combining water, lime and hemp stalks’

inner core. The lime component is made up of air lime, designed to

accelerate the setting process. This combination results in a flame-resistant,

pest resistant, moisture-balancing and strong, biodegradable insulator. In

addition, hempcrete is also reusable if milled and rehy
drated.

PLASTICS AND OTHER PETROLEUM-BASED PRODUCTS:

1. Hemp can produce strong, durable and environmentally friendly plastiic

substitutes.

2. 1000's of products made from petroleum-based plastic can be produced

from hemp-based composites.

3. Hemp plastic products are biodegradable.

4. Every 5 minutes the United States is using 2 MILLION plastic bottles.

5. Creating these plastic bottles uses large amounts of fossil fuels.

6. Plastic is made from the cellulose taken from petroleum.

7. Cellulose can be found in plants like hemp.

8. Hemp plastic is biodegradable and non-toxic.

HEMP FUEL

1. Oil, considered the gold of the 21st century, has caused environmental

problems through spills and creating air pollution.

2. The hemp plant can produce ethanol, methanol, and bio-diesel fuel that will

help our environment.

3. The oil from the hemp seed can help create bio-diesel fuel. This plant gives us

the opportunity to find replacements for our finite supply of oil we use as fuel.
