Dr James Hansen
1. Director of the Program on Climate Science, Awareness, and Solutions in the Earth and Environmental Sciences Institute, Columbia University.
2. Head of NASA's Goddard Institute for Social Studies from 1981-2013.
3. Director of the NASA Goddard Institute in New York City, a part of the Goddard Space Flight Center from 1981-2013. He retired from NASA 2013 after 46 years of government service.
4. He plans to take a more active role in the political and legal efforts to limit greenhouse gases.
Dr Hansen has studied the atmosphere of the Earth for years and is referred
to as the 'father of global warming' because of his early warnings in the 1980's. In
1988 he testified before the U.S. Congress on climate change to raise awareness
of global warming.
Dr. Hansen is currently representing his granddaughter, Sophia
Kivlehan, and "future generations" as plaintiffs in the Juliana v. United
States lawsuit which is suing the United States government and some of its
executive branch's positions for not protecting a stable climate system and in
determining the responsibility for climate change.
Dr. Hansen says the effect of greenhouse gas emissions on climate is determined
not by current emissions, but by the accumulated emissions over the lifetime of
greenhouse gas in the atmosphere.
